Miami, FL – Two Colombian men have been arrested and charged in connection with a transnational human smuggling operation that allegedly endangered teh lives of dozens of migrants, U.S. authorities announced Tuesday.
Hernando Manuel de la Cruz Rivera Orjuela, 52, and Luis Enrique Linero Pinto, 40, were apprehended in Colombia on December 13th at the request of the United States. They face charges related to transporting migrants from Colombia to the United States via a perilous route through Nicaragua, according to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The indictment alleges that the men facilitated the smuggling operation by advising migrants on how to reach the Caribbean island of San Andrés, where they would be met and provided lodging. From there, the migrants were allegedly transported by boat to Nicaragua, with the ultimate goal of reaching the United States through Central America and Mexico.
“These defendants are directly responsible for putting numerous migrants on the boat that disappeared off the coast of Nicaragua” in 2023,stated Nicole M. Argentieri, Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
