Mass Shooting on Locust Street Leaves Two Dead
The mass shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. along the 100 block of Locust Street in the Wilbur section of East Trenton, according to Captain David Ordille of the Trenton Police Department. Investigators found more than 50 spent shell casings at the scene, and multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said. Officials stated that multiple suspects walked up to the gathering and began firing into a crowd that mayor W. Reed Gusciora estimated included about 100 to 200 people. A witness told NBC10 that roughly 150 people were attending the event when an initial volley of shots rang out, leading the crowd to believe the danger had passed before gunfire erupted a second time.
Victims and Official Figures
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office identified the two individuals killed as a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. Officials explained that an additional person was counted following a vehicle crash that may have been tied to the incident. Mayor Gusciora noted in a public statement that one of the individuals who died had recently returned to the community after a period of incarceration and had been recognized for his commitment to positive reentry and personal change. Following the violence, police taped off an entrance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, located about two miles from the scene, where a damaged vehicle was towed from the emergency room entrance. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is investigating the shooting, and officials have urged anyone with information or video footage to contact law enforcement.
