On September 30, 2026, a workplace shooting at the United Rentals facility in Manassas, Virginia, left two workers dead and a third injured before the suspected gunman died by suicide following a police standoff, according to NBC News and local authorities.
The Manassas Workplace Shooting and Casualties
According to Manassas Police Chief Douglas Keen, 37-year-old Marvin Grant arrived at the property and engaged in an altercation with a colleague, telling another worker that three people were going to die before pulling out a handgun and opening fire on three employees. Emergency responders transported the three wounded workers to a hospital. Two of the victims—identified by authorities as 48-year-old Richard Lamont and 33-year-old Christopher Serrano—succumbed to their injuries. The third worker was listed in stable condition and awaited surgery. Police noted that at least eight employees were present at the establishment when the shooting occurred, and investigators had not yet determined a motive for the attack.
Interstate Pursuit and Standoff in Augusta County
Following the shooting, local law enforcement tracked Grant’s vehicle to Interstate 81 in Augusta County. Virginia State Police reported that troopers attempted to execute a traffic stop, but Grant continued driving until he came to a stop at mile marker 227. After confirming the driver was armed, officers deployed a police negotiator. The standoff lasted approximately an hour before Grant died by suicide. State police confirmed that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the encounter.
Emergency Response and Community Impact
During the active search and subsequent vehicle pursuit, local authorities closed access points to Wellington Road and Route 28, urging residents to stay away from the area. Nearby schools were placed under temporary lockdowns as a precautionary measure, and students at Jennie Dean Elementary School were relocated to Metz Middle School before the lockdown restrictions were lifted later in the day.
