Two Men Die in Separate Fires Across Lithuania

Two men died in separate house fires in Šiauliai and Radviliškis, Lithuanian police and fire departments reported on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

According to the Police Department, the first fire occurred late Wednesday evening, at approximately 11:25 PM, at Sakalo Sodų 1-ojo gatvė in Šiauliai. The fire involved a house owned by a man born in 1954.

The Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD) stated that upon arrival, the garden house was fully engulfed in flames. Household items in the kitchen and a room were burned and melted, and the attic was filled with smoke.

Firefighters reported that the homeowner was initially carried out of the burning building and resuscitation efforts were begun, but he was pronounced dead at 11:37 PM.

A gas cylinder was removed from the burned house, and the electricity supply was disconnected. Part of the outer wall cladding of the building was dismantled. No smoke detectors were present in the house.

Shortly after midnight, at approximately 12:30 AM, firefighters extinguished a fire in a house in the town of Šaukoto, Radviliškis district, and discovered the body of a deceased man whose identity was not immediately known.

The PAGD reported that when firefighters arrived at the scene, the wooden house was ablaze.

The fire destroyed the roof of the house and partially burned out the interior rooms, causing parts of the floor to collapse. Gas cylinders were removed from the house. Structural elements were demolished, and the debris was excavated. One person had already evacuated the house and was examined by medical personnel.

The body of the deceased man was found at 12:34 AM while excavating the fire site.

No smoke detectors were found in the building.

The cause of the fires is under investigation, and a pre-trial investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death.

So far this year, more than 30 people have died in fires in Lithuania, and nearly 2,000 fires have been extinguished across the country since the beginning of the year.
