Two Israeli military reservists were killed in the northern Gaza Strip when an operational drone malfunctioned, crashed, and subsequently exploded as they approached it, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
Operational Drone Malfunction Kills Two Reservists in Northern Gaza
The fatal incident occurred during operations conducted by the 16th Brigade, which has been deployed to the area since September 10. According to 99th Division Chief Brig.-Gen. Elad Tzuri, the two reservists successfully completed their first drone operation before a technical failure caused the aircraft to crash within their military outpost.
When the soldiers approached the wreckage to investigate, the device detonated. No other soldiers sustained injuries in the blast.
Identities of the Fallen Soldiers and Hospital Evacuation
The military identified the deceased soldiers as Maj. (Res.) Nadav Kali, 24, from Har Halutz, and Maj. (Res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, from Jerusalem. Both men served as reservists in the 16th Brigade.
Following the explosion, they were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.
Brig.-Gen. Tzuri described both men as excellent soldiers, noting that one served as a sergeant and the other as a squad commander.
IDF Grounds Fleet Pending Formal Safety Investigation
In response to the incident, the IDF announced that all attack and munition-dropping drones across all combat sectors are grounded pending the outcome of a formal safety investigation.
Military investigators are examining how the explosive device detonated upon the soldiers’ approach and are specifically reviewing whether Hamas utilized the electromagnetic spectrum to bring down or interfere with the aircraft.
However, the military stated its current assessment indicates that Hamas lacks the operational capability in the spectrum domain to execute such a maneuver. The IDF has not specified whether the aircraft was a suicide drone or a munition-dropping platform.

Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a public statement addressing the tragedy as families prepared for the holiday. Writing on social media platform X, Katz extended condolences on behalf of the country’s security establishment.
“At the hour when the people of Israel is preparing for the holiday, two dear families are grappling with the worst of all. On behalf of the entire security establishment, I wish to embrace and send condolences from the depths of the heart to their families. May the memory of Nadav and Ofek be a blessing.”
