Two Killed in East Anchorage Mobile Home Park Car Fire
Police in Anchorage, Alaska, have released the names of two individuals who died in a car fire that occurred in a mobile home park on June 18, according to KTTU, a local news outlet. The incident took place in the Muldoon mobile home park, a residential area in east Anchorage. The victims, whose identities were confirmed by the Anchorage Police Department (APD), have not been publicly identified beyond the names released by authorities.
The fire, which investigators described as “severe,” occurred around 3:45 p.m. on the date of the incident. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but the vehicle was already engulfed in flames, according to a statement from APD. No survivors were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials citing “multiple factors” that could have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
A spokesperson for the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) stated that the fire “presented significant challenges due to the density of the mobile home park and the conditions at the time.” The department declined to comment further on the investigation, directing inquiries to APD.
The Muldoon mobile home park, located along the Seward Highway, is a long-established community with a mix of permanent and seasonal residents. Local residents described the area as “tight-knit,” with many families having lived there for decades. A neighbor of the victims, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the community was “shocked and grieving” following the news of the fire.
No official statement has been released regarding the victims’ backgrounds, but preliminary reports suggest they were residents of the park. APD has not yet provided details on whether the fire was accidental or intentional. A criminal investigation is ongoing, with detectives working to determine if any external factors, such as arson or mechanical failure, played a role.
The Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office has been assisting local authorities with the investigation, according to a press release. “We are cooperating fully with Anchorage police to ensure a thorough and transparent examination of the incident,” the release stated.
Residents of the Muldoon park have expressed concern over the safety of the area, particularly in light of the fire’s rapid spread. A community meeting is scheduled for July 19 to address concerns and provide updates from local officials. Organizers said the meeting would include representatives from APD, AFD, and the Alaska Division of Fire Services.
The incident has also drawn attention to the risks associated with mobile home parks, particularly in areas with older infrastructure. A 2021 report by the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development noted that mobile home parks in the state face unique challenges, including limited access for emergency services and the potential for fires to spread quickly due to close proximity of units.
Local leaders have called for a review of safety protocols in similar communities. “This tragedy underscores the need for ongoing assessments of fire prevention measures in all residential areas,” said Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson in a statement.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the victims’ families and ensuring transparency in the findings. APD has not yet announced plans for a public memorial or tribute.
