Fresh Faces Join LA City Council: Nazarian and Jurado Sworn In
Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles City Council welcomed two new members, Adrin Nazarian and Ysabel Jurado, on Monday, December 9th, marking a shift in representation for the Second and Fourteenth districts. While the oaths were administered privately, a public ceremony followed during Tuesday’s council meeting, allowing residents to witness the official start of their terms.
Nazarian, a former assemblyman and aide to outgoing Councilmember Paul Krekorian, secured victory in the Second district, which encompasses neighborhoods like North Hollywood, Sun Valley, and Toluca Lake. He defeated progressive candidate Jillian Burgos, garnering 53.84% of the vote in the November 5th election.
Krekorian, who reached his term limit, will now serve as executive director of the Office of Major Events, playing a key role in preparations for upcoming sporting events, including the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Meanwhile, Jurado, a progressive candidate, unseated incumbent Kevin de León in the Fourteenth District, which includes downtown LA, Boyle Heights, and El Sereno. Her victory, with 57.17% of the vote, signals a desire for change within the district.
The November election also saw Councilwoman Heather Hutt secure her first full term representing the Tenth District, encompassing central LA neighborhoods. Hutt, who was appointed following the corruption conviction of her predecessor, Mark Ridley-Thomas, decisively defeated Grace Yoo.
Incumbent Councilmembers Nithya Raman, Imelda Padilla, and marqueece harris-Dawson, who all secured over 50% of the vote in the March primary, were also sworn in last week, continuing their representation of the Fourth, sixth, and Eighth districts, respectively.
