Two sailors have lost their lives in seperate incidents during the iconic sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, casting a somber shadow over the annual competition.
The tragic accidents occurred aboard the vessels Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline,with both sailors succumbing to injuries sustained after being struck by a boom in rough whether conditions. Despite immediate efforts to revive them, both sailors were pronounced dead.
“Our thoughts are with the crew members, families, and friends of the deceased,” said a statement released by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the race organizer.”We are unable to provide further details at this time as we are still in the process of notifying next of kin.The incidents are currently under inquiry by the authorities.”
This marks the first fatalities in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race since 1998, when a fierce storm claimed the lives of six sailors. The tragedy led to significant safety improvements and stricter regulations for the race.
Several boats have already withdrawn from the competition in the wake of the accidents, including the highly favored maxi-yacht Master Lock Comanche, which narrowly missed victory last year. The fastest yachts are expected to arrive in Hobart on Friday.
