Two sailors remain missing following an attack on the Panama-flagged oil tanker ELGAIA off the northern coast of Oman. Oman’s Maritime Security Center confirmed the assault.
The vessel was struck roughly 103 nautical miles northeast of the Musandam Governorate. The impact triggered an engine room fire that forced the crew to abandon ship.
Naval Units Evacuate 23 Crew Members
Omani naval units deployed swiftly to the site of the incident. They successfully evacuated 23 crew members and provided them with necessary medical care.
Rescue teams continue to scour the area for the two unaccounted-for sailors, according to reporting cited by Anadolu Agency.
Strait of Hormuz Security Alert Issued
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations issued a separate maritime security alert. It noted that an unidentified vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz at 2040 GMT on Monday.
The UKMTO reported no immediate environmental impact or damage from that incident. However, authorities have not formally confirmed whether that advisory corresponds directly to the ELGAIA strike.
Tanker Safely Towing to Port
Following the attack, the tanker was safely towed to port by Omani responders.
