The disaster, which was likely caused by a glacier collapse on August 26, has left at least 1,300 people dead and more than 5,000 missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency.

Hydropower Tunnel Rescues and Missing Workers

Rescue efforts have increasingly concentrated on 12 hydropower projects across Nepal, where authorities report about 900 workers remain missing and roughly 500 are believed trapped in various tunnels. A joint rescue team consisting of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts freed a Chinese worker from a 225-meter (about 740-foot) tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project, according to Nepal’s army. The rescued worker, identified as Lu Haitao by the Associated Press, is the third person pulled alive from the Trishuli project, following the rescue of two Nepalese workers on Friday. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV shared audio of Mr. Lu talking to an officer, in which he said he repeatedly shouted whenever he saw rescue crews’ lights, though rescuers could not hear him initially.

Lu Haitao, via CCTV Images shared by the Associated Press and the Nepal Army showed Mr. Lu being evacuated by helicopter while an army medic checked on him during the flight. According to CCTV, he was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition. Specialized rescue teams from India, China, South Korea, and the United States have deployed to search through debris, damaged structures, and tunnels across the hydropower sites.

In the flood-hit Nuwakot district, a woman named Chandika Kumari Shrestha was rescued alive from a damaged residential building along the swollen Trishuli River, according to the Nepal Army spokesperson. Images released by the army showed rescuers finding Ms. Shrestha covered in mud inside the house, providing her with bottled water before pulling her to safety wrapped in a gray blanket. Officials confirmed that Ms. Shrestha was airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment. Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah stated on social media that her survival had given hope to the entire nation.
