Two teenagers from the Mitchells Plain area of Cape Town were fatally shot in separate incidents on April 18, 2026, including a youth player affiliated with Juventus AFC’s local development programme.
The incidents occurred in the Elsies River and Morgan Village neighbourhoods, according to reports from the Daily Voice and confirmed by community sources. One of the victims, identified as Michael Jacobs, was a 17-year-old player in the Juventus AFC youth setup based in Mitchells Plain. He was shot while walking home from a training session near Glenside Road in Morgan Village.
The second victim, Ndakhe Gwala, also 17, was shot earlier the same day on Petunia Street in Elsies River while returning from Valhalla High School. Gwala was not affiliated with any football academy but was known in the community as an active participant in local youth outreach programmes.
Both shootings are under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with no arrests made as of April 19, 2026. Police have stated that the incidents appear to be unrelated and are being treated as separate cases, though both occurred within a few kilometres of each other in areas historically affected by gang-related violence.
Juventus AFC, which operates a grassroots development initiative in Mitchells Plain aimed at providing sporting opportunities and mentorship to at-risk youth, confirmed Jacobs’ involvement in their programme. In a brief statement, the club expressed deep sorrow over his death and pledged to cooperate fully with authorities.
We are devastated by the loss of Michael, a promising young player and valued member of our Juventus AFC family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this unimaginable time.
Juventus AFC Mitchells Plain Programme Statement, April 18, 2026
These are not just statistics — they are children. We keep losing our youth to violence that has no place in our streets. The community is hurting, and we need real action, not just promises.
Lentegeur Community Policing Forum Chairperson, speaking to Daily Voice, April 19, 2026
Community leaders from the Mitchells Plain United Residents Association and the Uitsig neighbourhood watch have called for increased police presence and expanded youth intervention programmes in the wake of the shootings. They emphasized the need for sustainable solutions that address both immediate safety concerns and the root causes of youth vulnerability to gang recruitment.
As of the evening of April 19, 2026, memorial gatherings were being organized by friends, teammates, and educators in both Mitchells Plain and Elsies River. Counselling services have been made available through local clinics and school-based support teams, particularly for students at Valhalla High School and nearby institutions affected by the losses.
