A Hindu temple caretaker identified as Nayan Das was found hanging from a tree in a hilly area of Khurushkul union under Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, three days after he went missing from his residence in Fultala village, Satkania upazila, Chattogram district.
According to family members, Nayan Das was called out of his house around 9:00pm on Sunday, April 19, by unidentified individuals. He has not been seen since. Locals and temple associates conducted search efforts in the surrounding area before discovering his body hanging from a tree with a cloth tied around his neck on Wednesday afternoon.
Police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy to determine whether the death was a result of murder or suicide. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Samiuddin of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station confirmed that Nayan Das served as a sebait (custodian) of Shor Ghona Nag Panchami Temple in the Purbo Hamzar Dail area.
Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police Sajedur Rahman stated that investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including how and why the incident occurred in that specific location. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities await the autopsy report to establish the cause and manner of death.
The incident has drawn attention from minority groups, who have called for strong action and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nayan Das’s disappearance, and death.
