Typhoon Pepito: Latest Updates on Track, Wind Alerts, and Evacuations in the Philippines
Typhoon Pepito (Man-yi) – Key Information
Typhoon Pepito is the 16th tropical cyclone in the Philippines for 2024. It is predicted to impact Eastern Visayas and much of Luzon. Rainfall may range from moderate to torrential, with wind signals potentially reaching Signal No. 5.
Landfall and Affected Areas
Pepito is likely to make landfall in Catanduanes on Saturday evening or early Sunday morning, November 17. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) states that other possible landfall locations include Northern Samar, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon, and Aurora.
Preparedness Measures
Residents of Tacloban formed long lines at supermarkets on November 15 to buy food, water, and supplies. Chairman Ariel Rex Lledo encouraged community members to gather necessary items to prepare for the storm. Others, like vendor Romulo, are making it a priority to be ready this time, unlike during Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
Evacuation Efforts
The Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Albay is providing shelter for evacuees. Over 400 people have taken refuge at the Catanduanes Provincial Capitol. The provincial government is maintaining a list of available evacuation centers.
In Northern Samar, Governor Edwin Ongchuan ordered preemptive evacuations in coastal towns, such as Lapinig, Mapanas, Gamay, and Palapag. The province is equipped with 2,000 emergency responders and 60 evacuation centers, along with 50,000 food packs to support families in need.
