Typhoon Bebinca: Shanghai Prepares for Landfall
Shanghai, China has canceled outdoor events and suspended trains as Typhoon Bebinca approaches, with the storm expected to make landfall in eastern China.
Typhoon Bebinca’s Forecasted Path
Typhoon Bebinca formed on the evening of September 14 and is expected to make landfall between the northern areas of Qidong in Jiangsu Province and the southern areas of Ningbo in Zhejiang Province.
Preparations and Warnings
The China Meteorological Administration issued an orange typhoon warning (equivalent to level II) on the morning of September 15, and took measures to minimize the impact of the storm.
Some trains operating on the Yangtze River Delta railway will be suspended on September 15 and 16 due to severe weather conditions. Airlines have suspended flights to Shanghai and several other cities in the Yangtze River Delta region.
Many outdoor cultural and sporting events have been adjusted or canceled. Shanghai residents received text messages advising them to stay home for safety.
Weather Conditions
The Shanghai Marine Monitoring Center said the Yangtze River Delta region could see waves as high as 4.8 meters inside the river mouth and as high as 7 meters outside.
Neighboring cities in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces are also preparing for the impact of Bebinca. Heavy to torrential rain is expected in southern Jiangsu, northern Zhejiang, and Shanghai, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain (100-120 mm).
Coastal areas, including Shanghai, Southeast Jiangsu, Hangzhou Bay, the Yangtze River estuary, and the Zhoushan Islands, will see wind gusts of up to level 13 (37-41.4 m/s). Near the center of Typhoon Bebinca, wind speeds may reach level 12-14.
Current Status
As of 5:00 p.m. on September 15 (local time), Typhoon Bebinca was about 400 km southeast of Shanghai.
