Typhoon Yagi Unleashes Devastation: Myanmar Mourns 110 Lives Lost, Vietnam Grapples with 233 Fatalities
Typhoon Yagi Leaves Trail of Destruction in Southeast Asia
Myanmar Residents Unprepared for Storm Due to Ongoing Civil War
Typhoon Yagi, the strongest typhoon of the year, has caused widespread destruction and loss of life in Southeast Asia, particularly in Myanmar and Vietnam.
According to reports, at least 110 people have lost their lives in Myanmar due to floods and landslides caused by the typhoon. The Myanmar rescue team has confirmed the deaths, citing the country’s ongoing civil war as a major factor in the residents’ inability to prepare for the storm.
The civil war, which has been ongoing for four years, has left the country without a functioning authority to predict and warn about catastrophic weather changes. As a result, residents were caught off guard by the storm’s arrival.
In one instance, a local rescue team found 60 dead bodies in Karausi, a town located 110km northeast of Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw, after the entire train station was submerged in muddy water. Around 80 people are still missing.
Typhoon Yagi formed as a tropical storm in the north-central Philippines on September 1st and later made landfall in Vietnam on September 7th. The storm caused widespread damage and flooding in both countries, with at least 20 people killed and 10 missing in the Philippines.
In Vietnam, the storm caused significant damage and flooding, particularly in the capital Hanoi and coastal areas. As of September 13th, Vietnamese authorities have confirmed 233 deaths and over 100 people are still missing.
