US Announces $8 Billion in Additional Military Aid to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden has announced an additional $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom against Russian invasion.

President Biden revealed the details of the aid package in a statement, emphasizing that “supporting Ukraine’s victory in its fight to protect its freedom from Russian invasion has been the highest priority of my administration.”

Presidential Drawing Authority Funds and Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative

The additional support plan consists of two major parts: the $5.5 billion Presidential Drawing Authority (PDA) fund and the $2.4 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) project.

The $5.5 billion PDA fund will provide military equipment to Ukraine while also replenishing US stocks. President Biden explained that the funds have been approved to ensure that the relevant budget appropriated by Congress can be fully utilized.

The $2.4 billion USAI project, led by the Department of Defense, will provide Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities, support unmanned aerial systems (UAS, drones, etc.), and air-to-ground ammunition, as well as help strengthen the foundation of Ukraine’s defense industry.

Long-Range Weapons and Training for Ukrainian F-16 Fighter Pilots

The additional support plan includes precision-guided glide bombs called ‘joint stand-off weapons (JSOW)’, which have a maximum range of 130 km and high accuracy.

President Biden also directed the Department of Defense to expand training for Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilots, with 18 additional pilots to be trained next year.

Ukrainian President Zelensky Expresses Gratitude and Commitment to Transparency

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is visiting the United States to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly, expressed his gratitude for the announcement of the additional support plan.

President Zelensky wrote on social media that the assistance provided by the United States “will be used in the most efficient and transparent manner.”

US-Ukraine Summit and the ‘Victory Plan’

President Biden and President Zelensky will meet at the White House to discuss the ‘victory plan’ prepared by Ukraine as a way to end the war.

President Zelensky explained that the plan consists of four major items and five provisions related to the post-war situation.
