U.S. Open: Golfers Prepare for a Grueling Test at Oakmont
Updated june 9, 2025
The 125th U.S. Open returns to Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, a course already notorious for its difficulty.
This year, however, players are bracing for even more extreme conditions.
Ahead of the U.S. Open, professional golfers scouting Oakmont have used words like “carnage” and ”unachievable” to
describe the course. Players can expect ankle-high rough, narrow fairways, the infamous “Church Pews” bunker, and
slick, fast greens.
Xander Schauffele noted the courseS reputation. “I’ve heard from several players, it’s the hardest course they’ve
ever played,” Schauffele saeid, citing the length, brutal rough and tricky up-and-down shots around the greens.
Justin Thomas, after a recent practice round, confirmed the course’s formidable challenge. The U.S. Golf
Association consistently picks Oakmont to provide the ultimate test in men’s professional golf.

The Clear Favorite: Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler arrives at Oakmont as the world’s top-ranked golfer, displaying dominant form. He has secured
three victories in his last four tournaments, including a recent win at the Memorial Tournament. Scheffler also
has experience at Oakmont, having participated in the 2016 U.S. Open as an amateur.
Scheffler recalled his early experience at Oakmont, where he shot a 1-under 69 in the first round of the 2016 U.S.Open. He emphasized the importance of accuracy off the tee for success at this challenging venue.

Other Contenders
Several other golfers are expected to contend for the U.S. Open title, including Bryson DeChambeau, the 2024 U.S.Open champion. Despite some concerns about his iron play, DeChambeau’s driving distance and putting skills make
him a threat.
Rory McIlroy hopes to rebound from a disappointing performance at last year’s U.S. Open. McIlroy missed the cut
at the recent RBC Canadian Open, struggling with his accuracy off the tee. He plans to test new drivers in
planning for oakmont.
Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion, seeks to end a winless drought. Known for his accuracy and ball-striking
ability, Morikawa could be a factor if he finds his form.
Jon Rahm, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, aims to improve his consistency off the tee. Russell Henley and Sepp Straka
are also considered strong contenders, given their recent performances and skills.
What’s next
The 2025 U.S. Open promises to be a demanding tournament, testing every aspect of the players’ games. With Oakmont’s
challenging layout and tough conditions, the competition will likely be a survival test.
