U.S. Soccer has launched R90+, a 24-month national development program designed to support high-potential Regional match officials preparing to advance toward National level assignments and professional competitions. The initiative brings together dedicated coaching, video performance analysis, and targeted match opportunities across four distinct geographical regions, starting with the South region at MLS NEXT Fest in December 2026.
How the R90 Plus Program Selects Referees
Selection into the R90+ cohort relies on a comprehensive national review process rather than a single match report or isolated evaluation. U.S. Soccer evaluates candidates by looking at consistency, development trajectory, and performance across the referee pathway. Officials do not submit applications for the initial intake; instead, candidates are identified through scouting, evaluations, and pathway recommendations. The first cohort focuses primarily on Regional Referees who have demonstrated strong performance, alongside a small wildcard group of exceptional officials approaching the Regional tier.
Structure and Support Across Twenty Four Months
Participants in the program receive structured support tailored around four core performance areas: decision-making, positioning, game management, and technical standards. Over the 24-month experience, each official works with a dedicated referee coach who reviews match footage, leads individual development conversations, and helps translate feedback into practical improvement.

Program Distinction From Referee Licensing
Participation in R90+ does not alter an official’s baseline certification or function as a standalone referee license. Officials retain their existing U.S. Soccer licenses while in the program and must continue meeting all licensing requirements for their respective levels. U.S. Soccer explicitly notes that selection into R90+ is a development opportunity that does not guarantee automatic progression, professional placement, or an accelerated path to National Match Official status.
First Intake Timeline at MLS NEXT Fest
The national rollout begins in the South region, with the inaugural cohort convening at MLS NEXT Fest in December 2026. National review and selection procedures run through September, after which U.S. Soccer contacts selected referees directly with further instructions.
