U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific: Celebrating Two Years of Growth and Global Partnerships
U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific Celebrates Two Years of Growth
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (AFNS) — The U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific marks its second anniversary. Leaders reflect on the growth and achievements of the unit in strengthening military space operations and partnerships in the region.
In the past two years, the U.S. Space Force has expanded its size and capabilities. It has established a 24/7 space watch cell and executed three significant combat exercises. The command has also signed its first component support plan and facilitated the deployment of space capabilities across the Indo-Pacific Command area.
Brig. Gen. Anthony Mastalir, the commander of U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific, highlighted the importance of this evolution to meet increasing security demands. He stated, “We’re growing the component to keep pace with the rapidly increasing security threat. Joint Force planners know that having a Guardian on the team is essential for creating synchronized operational plans.”
The command has also successfully helped with humanitarian efforts. It used commercial space assets to deliver timely images to aid local and international response teams during emergencies. This support was crucial after earthquakes in Japan and landslides in Papua New Guinea, as well as in responding to tropical storms in the Philippines and wildfires in Hawaii.
A key accomplishment for SPACEFOR-INDOPAC is enhancing collaboration with international allies. The command has solidified partnerships with 17 countries through over 45 key engagements, including meetings with 21 foreign military leaders.
Mastalir emphasized, “Guardians have answered the nation’s call, just as generations of Americans before us answered the call to protect and serve.”
As the space environment becomes more crowded and competitive, the U.S. Space Force aims to provide vital capabilities to the Joint Force. It delivers space planning and execution expertise, helping to neutralize threats and safeguard the Joint Force.
In December 2022, SPACEFOR-INDOPAC activated U.S. Space Forces – Korea and is set to activate U.S. Space Forces – Japan in December 2023. These moves show the ongoing commitment of the U.S. Space Force to the Indo-Pacific region.
