U.S. Stance on Syria: Urging De-escalation Amidst HTS Offensive

U.S. Stance on Syria: Urging De-escalation Amidst HTS Offensive

December 1, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

The situation in Syria is under close monitoring. We have communicated with regional leaders within the last 48 hours. The Assad regime refuses to engage in the political process outlined in UNSCR 2254. This refusal, along with its reliance on Russia and Iran, has led to the current collapse of Assad regime lines in northwest Syria.

The ongoing offensive is led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is a designated terrorist organization. The United States is not involved in this offensive. Instead, we, along with our partners and allies, call for a de-escalation of violence. We emphasize the need to protect civilians and minority groups. A serious political process is essential to end the civil war with a settlement that follows UNSCR 2254.

We will continue to defend U.S. personnel and military positions. These positions are crucial to prevent the resurgence of ISIS in Syria.
