ERIN, Wis. — Angel Yin’s decision to switch to a new putter paid off promptly at Erin Hills, as she carded a 4-under 68 to grab a share of the U.S. Women’s Open lead. Yin is joined atop the leaderboard by A Lim Kim, the 2020 champion, Jinhee Im, Yealimi Noh, Rio Takeda, and Julia Lopez Ramirez.
Yin, 26, of california, qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at age 13. Her best finish came in 2019 when she tied for second. She attributed her strong start to the new putter, saying she sought one that would “hold the ground and just do what I want it to do.”
Lopez Ramirez, making her U.S. Women’s Open debut, surprised many with a bogey-free round. The Mississippi State standout overcame an earlier appendectomy this year to contend at the prestigious event. “I feel like my confidence is coming back,” Lopez Ramirez said.
Takeda birdied six holes in a nine-hole stretch, while Noh benefited from an eagle.Im had a bogey-free round,and Kim made long birdie putts on the first and third holes.
The favorable scoring conditions at the 6,829-yard, par-72 course were attributed to calm winds. Noh noted that shorter tees and reachable par-5s contributed to the low scores. “It was definitely a good scoring day,” she said.
“I know U.S. Open is going to be extremely fast, so I wanted to find a putter that will hold the ground and just do what I want it to do,” Yin said. “It just so happened to be this putter. I started tinkering with it like about a month ago, and I got lucky to use it.”

Stronger winds are expected Friday, which could make scoring more challenging for the field at the U.S. Women’s Open.
