Although summer comes to an early end in Hokkaido, high school students competing in the “U18 Nissin Foods Hokkaido Block League 2024” are still heating up the city.
Attention on Komazawa University Tomakomai, the Inter-High School Championships Champion
The five teams participating in the men’s competition are Komazawa University Tomakomai, Asahikawa Ryukoku, Shirakaba Gakuen, Tokai University Sapporo, and Levanga Hokkaido U18, all of which competed in the final league of the Hokkaido Inter-High School Championships.
In recent years, Komazawa University Tomakomai has been leading Hokkaido high school basketball. On August 24th and 25th, in the Emperor’s Cup Hokkaido preliminaries, they showed a strong advance, defeating Hokkaido University, which is in the next category above, and Miyata Motors, a Hokkaido basketball powerhouse. Among the many talented players from outside Hokkaido, second-year student Miyamori Kota, who has experience as runner-up in the National Junior High School Athletic Tournament, is expected to take another step forward in this tournament.
Following them is Asahikawa Ryukoku, which made its first appearance in the Inter-High School Championships held in August. They are also competing in the Emperor’s Cup Hokkaido Qualifiers, and will be taking on strong teams in Hokkaido, mainly consisting of members from the Asahikawa area. Shirakaba Gakuen and Tokai University Sapporo are also prestigious schools in Hokkaido, and are proud of their standing. It will be interesting to see what tactics and strategies the teams that clashed in the Inter-High School Championships Qualifiers will use in the “U18 Nissin Foods Hokkaido Block League 2024”.
Expectations are high for the performance of Levanga Hokkaido U18, the top youth team in B.LEAGUE. Levanga Hokkaido U18 is a strong team that has won many titles in B.LEAGUE youth tournaments. The first generation of players who were the core of the team have graduated, but Ryudai Abe, who is already on the B.LEAGUE court as a special youth player, will be watching to see how he plays.
This is the first official tournament for Levanga Hokkaido U18 against a high school team, and winning the title of the “U18 Nissin Foods Hokkaido Block League 2024” will be very meaningful and valuable. This tournament will bring new possibilities to the Hokkaido basketball scene.

Japan Airlines Hokkaido changes the balance of power in Hokkaido
Four teams that competed in the final league of the Hokkaido Inter-High School Championships will also be participating in the women’s competition: Japan Airlines Hokkaido, Rakuno Gakuen University Towanomori Sanai, Sapporo Higashi Commercial High School, and Obihiro Otani High School. Japan Airlines Hokkaido, which has participated in the national tournament for two consecutive years despite only being established two years ago, is expected to be at the center of the competition.
Japan Airlines Hokkaido is a team of second-year students, but they have excellent players in each position, and especially on the inside, players with size, including international students, have been showing their strength and have made a definite mark on the national stage. The guards are also fast and have high offensive power, and they show a variety of attacks with Arisa Ihara, a former member of the German U15 women’s national team, as their finisher. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see how the three opposing teams defend Japan Airlines Hokkaido and get into their own rhythm.
Sapporo Higashi Commercial is a team on a roll after defeating Sapporo Yamanote in the Hokkaido Inter-High School Championships. Obihiro Otani is also a team with a lot of experience, having won the fierce Tokachi block since last year with the current third-year students as the main players, and having fought in the Hokkaido tournament, so a close match is expected. Each team is highly complete and has room to grow, so we can expect the emergence of teams and players that will grow even during the short tournament period.
Who will be the first champion of the “U18 Nissin Foods Hokkaido Block League 2024”? Many of the matches are between teams that have already clashed in the Inter-High School Championships preliminaries, so you can’t take your eyes off not only the performance of each player, but also the team’s fighting style, including the bench members, and the coaches’ scouting and other tactics. In the “U18 Nissin Foods Hokkaido Block League 2024,” players will compete in a certain number of matches, unlike in tournament-style competitions, and by building a system that allows them to develop different habits and repeatedly prepare for matches, we aim to further improve their competitiveness. Please come to the venue to see the players fighting passionately.
