UAB Heersink School of Medicine Seeks Director of Rural Medicine
– The Huntsville Regional Medical Campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine is actively recruiting a full-time, non-tenure earning physician to serve as Director of Rural Medicine.
The position, open to applicants at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor rank, requires a board-certified Family Medicine physician with a minimum of three years of experience. Ideally, candidates will have experience practicing in a rural setting or with a patient population drawn from rural communities, according to a job posting.
The role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, including precepting and teaching family medicine residents and medical students. The Director of Rural Medicine will also be tasked with recruiting and mentoring students from rural Alabama, fostering collaborations with family physicians throughout the region and the Rural Health Board of Alabama, and advocating for rural medicine initiatives with state legislators.
The position also encourages the development of a faculty clinical practice. As Director, the individual will lead the Rural Medicine Program, a five-year initiative beginning with a pre-matriculation year at Auburn University and continuing through four years of medical school at UAB, with clinical training taking place on the Huntsville Campus.

Candidates for the obstetrics-focused position must hold an MD or DO degree, be board certified in Family Medicine with a fellowship in Surgical Obstetrics, possess an Alabama medical license, and have medical staff privileges at Huntsville Hospital, as well as provider credentialing.
