UAE’s midday Break Offers Relief for Delivery Workers
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) is expanding its Midday Break initiative, providing more than 10,000 air-conditioned rest stations for delivery workers across the United Arab Emirates. This significant increase in resources aims to protect workers from the intense summer heat.
The annual UAE Midday Break, effective from June 15 to Sept. 15, is a collaborative effort between government entities and private sector partners. The initiative includes the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, the integrated Transport Centre in abu Dhabi, and various Departments of Economic Development.
Several delivery platforms, including Talabat, Deliveroo, Noon, and Careem, are participating, along with restaurants, shopping centers, and cloud kitchens. These partners are crucial in supporting the worker protection efforts during the hottest months.
MoHRE emphasized the importance of this initiative, recognizing the unique operational challenges faced by delivery service workers. Unlike workers in fixed locations, delivery personnel require accessible rest facilities to mitigate the risks of heat exhaustion.
Delivery workers can locate the nearest rest stations using interactive maps available on their respective delivery applications. This ensures they can quickly find relief during the Midday Break hours, which run from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Building on last year’s provision of 6,000 rest stations, this year’s expansion underscores the effectiveness of these measures in safeguarding workers’ health. The Midday Break also mandates that employers provide shaded rest areas, cooling devices, ample drinking water, hydration supplements, and first aid equipment at work sites.
MoHRE encourages the public to report any violations of the Midday Break regulations by calling 600 590 000 or using the ministry’s smart application or website.
