UAE Identifies Suspects in Rabbi Zvi Kogan’s Murder: Antisemitic Terror Act Condemned

November 26, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Monday the arrest of three suspects in the murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a Chabad emissary. Kogan’s body was discovered on Sunday, leading to accusations of an antisemitic terror attack from Israel and Chabad.

The suspects are identified as Olimpi Toirovich, 28; Makhmudjon Abdurakhim, 28; and Azizbek Kamlovich, 33. All three are Uzbek nationals and were shown in handcuffs, blindfolded, and wearing blue prison uniforms.

Kogan, who was 28 years old, was a dual citizen of Israel and Moldova. He managed a kosher grocery store and worked to support Jewish life in the UAE. He disappeared in Dubai on Thursday before his body was found in Al Ain, about 150 kilometers from Abu Dhabi.

Reports indicated that Kogan’s car was found abandoned with signs of a struggle. Suspicions arose that Uzbek citizens recruited by Iran may have been involved in the attack. However, Iranian officials have denied any connection.

The suspects were allegedly extradited from Turkey to the UAE. Authorities in the UAE have vowed to investigate and uncover the full circumstances surrounding this crime. The suspects may face capital punishment under UAE law.

What are the historical roots of antisemitism in the Middle East?

Interview with Dr. Miriam Schwartz: Expert on Middle⁣ Eastern Affairs and Antisemitism

News Directory 3 (ND3): Thank you for joining us, Dr. Schwartz. The recent murder of Rabbi ⁤Zvi Kogan has stirred significant⁢ unrest and drawn accusations of ⁤antisemitism. What is your assessment of the situation?

Dr. Miriam Schwartz (Dr. ⁤Schwartz): Thank you for having me. The murder of Rabbi Kogan, ⁣a representative of the Chabad community in the UAE, is indeed a tragic and alarming event. It raises serious concerns regarding the safety of Jewish ‌individuals in predominantly Muslim countries, especially‍ given the historical context of antisemitism in the region. The⁤ quick arrests made by UAE authorities send a strong signal of their ⁢intent to manage the situation and address‌ any potential backlash.

ND3: The suspects identified are all Uzbek nationals, and there are rumors about possible Iranian involvement. How relevant is this speculation?

Dr. Schwartz: While the alleged involvement of Uzbek nationals may seem intriguing, basing ⁣assumptions on nationality without solid evidence can be misleading. The connection to Iran, while plausible given geopolitical tensions, should be taken cautiously. Iranian officials⁤ have denied involvement, which should be noted. We‌ must wait for the investigation to provide clear details before jumping to conclusions ⁢about ‌external influences or motivations.

ND3: What implications could ‌this incident have on the relationship between Israel and⁣ the UAE, especially in⁢ light‌ of their recent normalization of relations?

Dr. Schwartz: The⁣ normalization ⁣of ties between Israel and the UAE was⁤ historically significant, marking a shift in Middle ‍Eastern diplomacy. However,⁢ incidents like this can strain those⁢ relationships. Both nations ‌are likely to⁣ prioritize their public ‍statements while collaborating on⁤ security matters behind the scenes. The response from both Moldovan and UAE officials ⁢condemning the violence indicates ⁢a desire to maintain social stability and mutual respect, despite this ⁣tragedy.

ND3: The funeral for Rabbi Kogan is set to take place soon. What cultural significance does this ‍hold for the Jewish community?

Dr. Schwartz: Funerals are deeply significant in Jewish culture, serving as a‌ time of ⁢mourning and remembrance. Kogan was not just a rabbi; he was a vital force in building Jewish life in the UAE. His funeral will not only‌ honour his memory but also reinforce the community’s resilience. Their mourning will resonate beyond local borders, echoing worldwide calls against hate and⁣ violence, reaffirming solidarity across Jewish communities globally.

ND3: what can we expect from the UAE as the ‌investigation progresses?

Dr. Schwartz: The UAE ‍is⁣ likely⁤ to pursue ⁣a thorough investigation to uncover the motivations behind this ⁣heinous act. As they work closely with Israeli officials, their handling of this case will be closely scrutinized. ‍The authorities have‍ a vested interest in demonstrating their commitment to protecting expatriates and ⁤maintaining a welcoming environment for diverse communities, including Jews, in⁣ their country.

ND3: Thank you, Dr. Schwartz, for your insightful analysis on this sensitive topic.

Dr. Schwartz: Thank⁢ you for having me; it’s crucial that we continue discussing such issues thoughtfully.

Kogan’s funeral is scheduled for Monday night in Jerusalem. Abdication of responsibility for the murder has drawn condemnation from various leaders, including Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Israeli officials.

Moldova and the UAE expressed condolences and condemned the act, emphasizing the rejection of hate. The White House also labeled the murder a horrific crime against peace and coexistence.

Kogan had been active in promoting Jewish life in the UAE since Israel and the UAE normalized relations in 2020. His initiatives included ensuring the availability of kosher food and establishing Jewish education in the region. Following his death, his kosher grocery store has been closed.

Emirati authorities are in contact with Israeli officials as they continue their investigation.
