Updated June 7, 2025
The United Arab Emirates will prohibit single-use plastics nationwide by Jan. 1, 2026, according to Dr. amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, minister of climate change and environment. The announcement underscores the UAE’s dedication to combating plastic pollution and fostering a sustainable environment.
Dr. Al Dahak, marking World Environment Day,emphasized the nation’s commitment to environmental protection. The upcoming ban on single-use plastic products encompasses their import, production, and trade, representing a significant step beyond the 2024 ban on plastic bags.
This phased approach aims to eliminate unnecessary plastics from daily life, promoting sustainable packaging and recycling solutions. The UAE’s Circular Economy Policy supports these efforts by encouraging sustainable resource use in green infrastructure, transportation, manufacturing, and food systems, all designed to reduce plastic waste.
“The policy prioritises reducing plastic waste and promoting innovative solutions for sustainable packaging and recycling. Moreover, we are resolutely committed to managing hazardous waste and aggressively reducing plastic waste at every level,” Dr. Al Dahak said.
Dr. Al Dahak also highlighted the Clean Rivers initiative by Erth Zayed Philanthropies, which addresses plastic pollution in waterways by empowering local communities and supporting innovation.
What’s next
The UAE will continue to develop and implement policies aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy, aligning with global efforts to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment for future generations.
