Saab Delivers Fifth Global A Aircraft to the United Arab Emirates
Saab, the world leader in defense and security solutions, has announced the delivery of its fifth Global A aircraft to the United Arab Emirates.
The agreement is a continuation of the long-term strategic partnership between the Swedish company and the UAE.
In an interview with CNN Al-Iqtisadiya, Saab’s General Manager in the Middle East, Helen Pitman, said of the importance of this partnership: “The collaboration between Saab and the UAE is not new, as it stretches back many decades, but what distinguishes this partnership is the ‘connected Continuous innovation and response to the UAE’s changing defense needs.”
Pitman explained that the partnership actually began when the UAE ordered five Global Eye aircraft in November 2015, with the first aircraft delivered in April 2020.
Since then, Saab was able to deliver the entire fleet of five aircraft by September 2024, reflecting the company’s commitment to delivering advanced solutions and the highest technical standards on time.
These aircraft, which integrate the latest sensors and radar, represent a qualitative leap in air surveillance, as they provide the ability to detect air, sea and ground threats with speed and high efficiency.
Evolution of the Global Eye System
Since the delivery of the first Global Eye aircraft, the system’s capabilities have evolved significantly to keep pace with growing security threats in the region.
Pitman explained: “At Saab, we are constantly working to improve the system based on the needs of our partners – as the first foreign customer to request this system – has benefited. We continuously make changes to ensure system compatibility with the changing security landscape.”
Pitman considers that “Global Eye” is the only system capable of providing a multi-dimensional surveillance solution from a single platform, which allows the UAE forces to simultaneously detect air, sea and land threats and indicate that this operation in a complex environment Capabilities, such as detecting elusive drones or targets in conditions of confusion, are what make “Global Eye” an exceptional system on the market.
Strengthening National Security
Pitman emphasized that the Global Eye is not just an air defense tool, but represents a national strategic value for the UAE.
The system provides versatile solutions ranging from defense to assisting in natural disaster rescue operations, enhancing its position as a critical component in maintaining the country’s security.
Pitman added: “This system provides the UAE Armed Forces with a proactive capability to detect threats and respond to them quickly and effectively, providing critical time to take necessary action.”
The Future of Defense Cooperation
Apart from the successful delivery of aircraft globally, Saab has ambitious plans to continue expanding its presence in the UAE.
Pitman indicated that Saab intends to develop new solutions based on the latest innovations in defense, including providing advanced radar systems and air traffic management solutions such as “Giraffe” for military and civilian use.
Pitman said: “We see the UAE as a long-term strategic partner as we progress on new projects, we believe the partnership with the UAE will remain strong and include other areas of advanced technology that will enhance the country’s national defense readiness.”
