Uber COO Return: Khosrowshahi’s Shift
Uber Names Andrew Macdonald COO in Leadership Shake-Up
Updated June 02, 2025
Uber has tapped Andrew Macdonald, previously head of mobility, as it’s new president and chief operating officer. This marks the first time Uber has had a COO since 2019. The move signals a meaningful shift in leadership under Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi, who aims to broaden the company’s reach.
Macdonald, who joined Uber in 2012, will now oversee both the mobility and food delivery sectors. He will also be responsible for Uber’s autonomous vehicle initiatives and membership programs. Macdonald will report directly to Khosrowshahi.
The company aims to solidify its position as a leading platform, expanding into areas like restaurant bookings and retail. A key focus will be improving coordination between its core ride-hailing and food delivery services. Uber also seeks to become the go-to platform for autonomous vehicles.
Khosrowshahi addressed employees in an internal memo, assuring them that the leadership changes did not reflect any plans for him to leave the company. He emphasized his commitment to Uber’s future.
Macdonald’s promotion will allow Khosrowshahi to delegate some of his daily responsibilities. This aims to distribute decision-making and prevent bottlenecks, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, Uber’s head of delivery, announced his departure after nearly 13 years with the company. New heads of mobility and delivery, along with a head of autonomous mobility and delivery, will report to Macdonald.
“This is a natural next step in our evolution as a company, as we drive growth by increasing engagement across our entire platform,” Khosrowshahi said.
Macdonald will relocate from New York to Toronto, joining much of Uber’s leadership team, including Khosrowshahi. He is set to receive $5 million in stock, contingent on meeting specific time and performance goals. The appointment of Macdonald as COO represents a strategic move to enhance uber’s operational efficiency and growth prospects in the competitive ride-sharing and delivery market. This leadership change underscores Uber’s commitment to innovation and its ambition to dominate the evolving landscape of transportation and on-demand services.
What’s next
With Macdonald at the helm of operations, Uber is poised to aggressively pursue its expansion plans, focusing on integrating new services and technologies to enhance user experience and drive revenue growth. The company’s strategic focus on autonomous vehicles and diversified service offerings signals a long-term vision to remain at the forefront of the industry.
