Updated June 4, 2025
Ridesharing companies Uber and lyft are intensifying their competition by targeting the senior market. Both are rolling out services designed to appeal to older riders with features such as enhanced safety, live phone support, and user-amiable interfaces.
Uber expanded its Senior Accounts program nationwide in June, following initial tests in Phoenix and Orlando. The service, integrated into Uber’s Family Profile, offers larger text, fewer buttons, and simplified navigation, according to Briana Gilmore, Uber’s global head of accessibility policy. This initiative aims to improve the rideshare experience for older adults.

Gilmore acknowledged the industry’s past shortcomings in serving older riders. “Transportation is truly one of the biggest barriers to independence as we age,” Gilmore said, emphasizing the importance of accessible transportation for health care, nutrition, and social connections.
Uber also introduced Simple Mode,a streamlined version of the app for all older adults. This mode offers the same features but with a simplified interface, larger text, and fewer buttons.
Lyft is testing “lyft Silver,” a similar service with live phone support and ride details shared with trusted contacts. Lyft also prioritizes matching riders with vehicles that are easier to enter and exit. As of May,Lyft had rolled out the service to 25,000 people.
Both Uber and Lyft have been introducing similar services, including shuttle options, enhanced airport pickups, ride scheduling, and “price lock” features. They are also working on integrating autonomous vehicles into their platforms as they vie for market share in the rideshare sector.
