Uber has announced a $10 billion investment to deploy 120,000 autonomous vehicles and launch robotaxi services in at least 15 cities this year, marking a pivotal shift in its strategy for self-driving technology. The move, disclosed by the company in a statement, positions Uber as a platform connecting multiple autonomous vehicle (AV) providers rather than developing its own system. This approach directly challenges rivals such as Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla, which have pursued in-house AV development.
The investment is supported by Uber’s strong financial performance, including $2.8 billion in free cash flow during the second quarter. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized that the funding comes from “a position of strength,” enabling Uber to accelerate its cross-platform strategy. “Our ambition is clear: to become the world’s leading commercialization platform for autonomous mobility,” he said.
Uber’s platform strategy involves partnerships with AV technology firms, including Wayve, Zoox, Rivian, and Lucid. Instead of building a single autonomous system, the company is investing in vehicle fleets and taking equity stakes in these startups. It is also deploying sensor-equipped vehicles to collect driving data for partners, which they use to refine their self-driving algorithms. This model contrasts with Uber’s earlier asset-light approach, which focused on minimizing direct ownership of vehicles.
A key partnership is with Wayve, a UK-based AV company specializing in urban environments. Transport for London has granted Wayve permits to operate 15 modified Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles with safety drivers, a step toward commercial robotaxi services. Wayve CEO Alex Kendall called the approval “the UK’s first license for AV technology to operate,” stating that rides could begin “in a matter of weeks.” Transport for London confirmed the clearance of the 15 vehicles for public road testing.
The initiative reflects broader industry challenges in commercializing autonomous mobility. While Uber aims to scale its platform, questions remain about safety, scalability, and profitability. The company has not disclosed the full list of 15 targeted cities or a timeline for reaching the 120,000-vehicle goal. Additionally, the status of Uber’s €13 billion offer for German delivery group Delivery Hero remains unresolved, with a $4 billion stake already paid.
Investors have expressed concerns about the potential disruption of Uber’s core ride-hailing business, which relies on human drivers. The stock has declined 13% in 2026, partly due to fears that robotaxis could undercut demand for human-driven services. Uber argues its base of over 200 million customers and integrated platform give it an edge, allowing it to route trips across multiple services. CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy stated the company will continue leveraging its balance sheet for growth, including AVs and international expansion.
The success of Uber’s platform model depends on converting partner technologies into reliable urban services. While Wayve’s London trial represents progress, the industry must still prove that driverless transport can operate safely and profitably.
