Cincinnati-based UC⁣ Health is undergoing strategic shifts, including⁣ workforce reductions and service adjustments, to enhance long-term sustainability and focus on high-demand‍ areas.

Workforce reduction

UC Health ⁢recently laid off approximately 50 employees, representing less than 1% of its total ⁤workforce,as part of a broader ‍restructuring⁣ effort.⁢ Affected employees were offered severance packages and are eligible to apply for other ⁤positions within the⁣ UC Health system, according to a statement released on september 4, 2024, ⁤to ⁣ Becker’s.

These cuts are along with⁢ previously announced layoffs. A WARN notice filed on may 29, 2024, indicated that approximately 474 employees would be laid off with⁤ the planned⁢ closure⁣ of the Daniel ⁤Drake Center for Post-Acute Care‍ by September 30, 2024, and the ⁣sale ‍of its affiliated assisted living facility, Bridgeway Pointe.

Strategic‍ service Changes

Robert Wiehe, senior vice president and COO of UC Health, stated that these decisions are “a strategic step forward ensuring we can ⁤grow with purpose, expand access⁤ to high-quality ⁤care and meet the changing⁤ needs of our⁣ community.”

UC Health will also discontinue operations of its mobile Stroke Unit by September 19, 2024, citing low patient volumes and high operating costs. However, all⁢ employees working on ⁤the Mobile Stroke Unit will remain employed, and the system’s ⁢larger mobile care team will continue to provide specialized transport services, including operating the area’s only⁢ mobile⁤ ICU.

Focus on Neuroscience⁣ and Stroke Care

Brett Kissela, MD, director of the⁤ UC ⁤Gardner Neuroscience Institute and chief of research services at UC Health, ⁢emphasized that the changes will allow for resource redirection to areas⁤ of greatest ⁣need. “This ⁢plan allows us to redirect resources to where they are needed⁢ most for our ⁤patients, expanding our ability to deliver ⁣lifesaving care to more people,” Kissela said in a ⁤September 5, 2024, news release. UC Health will continue to advance stroke research and provide care⁢ through its internationally recognized⁤ UC Comprehensive Stroke Center.
