Frost Embraces Underdog Role in UCF Football Return
Updated June 01, 2025
Scott Frost’s return to UCF as head coach marks a new chapter after his tenure at Nebraska. Following a challenging period with the Cornhuskers,Frost is back where his coaching career gained momentum. He aims to revitalize the Knights and guide them toward national prominence as they navigate the Big 12 conference.
Frost acknowledged the challenges ahead, especially with a roster featuring over 60 new players. Despite this, he expressed optimism about the team’s potential and embraces the underdog spirit that has historically defined the UCF program. Recent trends within the Big 12 suggest that a swift turnaround is within reach.
UCF is expected to be ranked low in the Big 12 preseason media poll. Some sportsbooks list them with long odds to win the conference title. Frost welcomes this skepticism.
“I love where we are, you know, people aren’t going to pick us to do very well this year, that’s great,” Frost said at Big 12 spring meetings in Orlando. “UCF’s always kind of performed with a chip on their shoulder and won a lot of games that people didn’t expect them to historically.”
He added that the players are eager to exceed expectations.
Arizona State’s unexpected Big 12 title run last season serves as an example. Despite being the media poll’s lowest pick, they achieved meaningful success. Since 2017, the Big 12 Championship Game has consistently featured at least one team initially ranked outside the top three, highlighting the conference’s competitive landscape and offering hope for UCF football.
UCF returns only four starters from last season, presenting a significant challenge in replacing lost production.Arizona State,in contrast, had considerably more returning starters before their championship season.
Arizona State coach Dillingham noted the motivational aspect of being an underdog.
“It’s less fun, to be honest,” Dillingham said about being among the favorites. “It’s naturally motivating for people to say, ‘You suck,’ and it’s way more difficult to people to say, ‘You’re good.'”
What’s next
Frost’s focus remains on building a competitive team that can defy expectations and capitalize on the underdog mentality. The UCF Knights football program aims to leverage its history of surprising success to make an impact in the Big 12.
