Cycling Braces for Betting Scandal: UCI Takes Action
Recent high-profile betting scandals in the NBA and MLB have raised concerns about the potential for similar issues to arise in cycling, notably with the rise of “spot” or “prop” bets – wagers on specific in-game actions. Experts warn these types of bets are tough to detect and coudl threaten the integrity of the sport.
UCI president David Lappartient has identified gambling as a major risk to cycling, alongside doping and technological fraud, and has made protecting the sport a top priority since taking office in 2017.
Current UCI Regulations:
* Article 1.1.088: Prohibits all license holders from any involvement in organizing bets on cycling events or placing bets on events they could participate in, directly or indirectly.
* Penalties: Breaching the UCI’s ethics code can result in a two-year suspension and loss of racing license.
* Legal Action: The UCI will also notify outside legal authorities, potentially leading to criminal charges.
The UCI is actively working to strengthen its rules regarding sponsorship and betting to further mitigate the risk of race-fixing and protect the sport’s credibility.
