UCLA Featured in LA Times Report on Boom Streaming Adaptation

Streaming platforms have triggered a resurgence in young-adult (YA) book adaptations, creating a trend that has surprised both industry studios and academic scholars. According to reporting by the Los Angeles Times on April 13, 2026, this boom is driven by a combination of the global reach of streaming services and a significant shift in audience demand toward diverse and authentic storytelling.

The surge in popularity is evident across multiple platforms, with several titles becoming pop culture sensations. Notable examples include The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime Video and the To All the Boys trilogy on Netflix. More recent successes include the college drama Tell Me Lies on Hulu and the hockey romance Heated Rivalry on HBO Max.

One of the most prominent examples of this trajectory is the Heartstopper universe. Created by Alice Oseman, the project began as a small web comic on Tumblr nearly a decade ago before expanding into graphic novels. It eventually became a Netflix series in 2021, focusing on LGBTQ+ teenagers exploring identity, friendship, and love.

Yalda T. Uhls, the founder and chief executive of UCLA’s Center for Scholars & Storytellers, notes that while YA adaptations often rely on classic themes of emotional turmoil and young love, the current boom is specifically tied to diverse representation. Uhls states that younger generations are rejecting stereotypes in favor of characters and storylines that more accurately reflect their own lives.

This shift in preference is supported by data from a survey administered by Uhls’ nonprofit in 2025, which indicated that audiences are increasingly gravitating toward authenticity in their entertainment.

Industry Trends and the Hollywood Diversity Report

The trend toward diverse YA content aligns with broader findings from UCLA’s research into the entertainment industry. The UCLA Hollywood Diversity report has been cited as evidence that diverse casting and storylines are in high demand among global audiences.

A specific study released on June 18, 2025, as Part 2 of the 2025 Hollywood Diversity Report, found that streaming films have been a particularly successful area for diversity efforts. The report revealed that the proportion of women and people of color working in key entertainment roles has increased since the previous annual study.

The research further indicated that a majority of the top 20 streaming-only films released in 2024 featured diverse casts. Specifically, one out of every two lead roles in the year’s top streaming movies was played by an actor of color. The study found that women and people of color in lead streaming film roles exceeded proportional representation.

Streaming platforms are one of the few places where the stories and faces that reflect the people of this country can be found on and off screen.

This success in streaming is contrasted with the theatrical market, although Part 1 of the 2025 Hollywood Diversity Report, released in February 2025, found that theatrical films with casts reflecting real-world diversity performed better at the box office.

The combination of high audience demand for representation and the accessibility of streaming platforms has created an environment where diverse YA adaptations can reach a global scale, sustaining a race for content that shows no signs of slowing down.
