UConn Women’s Basketball Completes Undefeated Regular Season, 47-Game Win Streak

UConn Women’s Basketball Completes Undefeated Regular Season, 47-Game Win Streak

March 7, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

For the 11th time in program history, the UConn women’s basketball team has completed an undefeated regular season. The Huskies capped a dominant run with an 85-49 victory over St. John’s on March 1, 2026, finishing with a perfect 31-0 record.

The victory, played at Madison Square Garden in front of 9,612 fans, marked the culmination of a season defined by consistent excellence. Prior to the finale, UConn had demonstrated its dominance with a 50-point win over Creighton on February 11, followed by double-digit victories against Marquette on Valentine’s Day and Villanova on February 18.

This undefeated season extends UConn’s current win streak to 47 games, dating back to the 2024-25 season. This streak is tied for the fifth-longest in Division I history, and remarkably, UConn boasts five of the top six longest win streaks of all time. Their last defeat came on February 6, 2025, at Tennessee.

Despite the seemingly effortless nature of their 31-0 record, head coach Geno Auriemma emphasized the challenges his team faced, particularly the pressure of maintaining a perfect season and “dealing with the ghosts” of the program’s storied past. “When you are fortunate enough to go through 31 games and win them all, there is something to be proud of,” Auriemma said. “There is something good about it, and they should feel really good about it.”

The Huskies’ success wasn’t simply about avoiding losses. it was about consistently overpowering opponents. Their average margin of victory throughout the regular season was substantial, and they navigated a schedule ranked as the 13th-toughest in the nation according to the NET rankings. A key turning point came against then-No. 15 Tennessee in February, a rematch of the game that ended their previous season. UConn dominated the second half of that contest, securing a 30-point victory and signaling their intent to remain undefeated.

The current 47-game win streak ties the 2013-2015 UConn team for the sixth-longest streak in Division I women’s college basketball history. The team’s performance throughout the Big East season was particularly impressive, culminating in the decisive win over St. John’s.

National player of the year candidate Sarah Strong echoed Auriemma’s sentiment, acknowledging the accomplishment while also emphasizing the need for continued focus. “Coach came in [the locker room and] said he was proud of us,” Strong said. “We also have a lot to work on to get ready for the Big East tournament, so just enjoy the win now and be ready to get back to work.”

The Huskies now turn their attention to the Big East tournament and, the NCAA tournament, where they will be aiming for their seventh undefeated campaign and a repeat national championship. They are currently nine wins away from achieving that goal.

Elsewhere in women’s college basketball, Valparaiso remains the only team without a win this season, holding a 0-31 record. Central Connecticut and Niagara both recently secured their first victories of the season, escaping previously winless campaigns.

UConn’s undefeated season is a testament to their talent, coaching, and unwavering commitment to excellence. While the pressure of maintaining perfection will undoubtedly intensify as they enter the postseason, the Huskies have already proven they are capable of handling it. The program’s legacy continues to grow, and this latest achievement further solidifies UConn’s position as a dominant force in women’s college basketball.
