A Novel Approach to Language Learning
Last school year, students in grades 4 and 5 at Uddaredsskolan adopted a unique method for learning English, moving beyond customary classroom instruction. The project aimed to demonstrate the diverse and engaging ways to master the language while simultaneously learning about another country and its culture – France. The initiative’s success is underscored by its recent accolades at both the national and European levels.
The project’s core involved collaboration with a french school, allowing students to practice English with native speakers and gain firsthand insights into French culture. This immersive experience extended beyond textbook learning, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for both languages and cultures.
Fundraising for a Cultural Exchange Trip
Driven by the project’s success, the class, with support from the school and parents, initiated a fundraising campaign in the spring of 2023 to finance a trip to Paris. The goal is to enable the students to meet their French friends in person before graduating from fifth grade. Parental support for the trip has been overwhelmingly positive, with excellent cooperation between the school and guardians.
National and European Recognition
The spring of 2023 saw the awarding of the Swedish eTwinning Prize. While acknowledging the strong competition from other worthy projects across Sweden, the school remained optimistic. The University and College council (UHR) UHR is responsible for selecting the winning project.
Unofficial reports indicated that the French partner school’s project, also a recipient of a european Quality Award, was a strong contender for the final selection. Furthermore, the Swedish class was also in contention for the European eTwinning Prize in the 8-11 age category.
