Alexandre Pantoja Retains Title, Joshua Van Emerges as Potential Challenger at UFC 317

Alexandre Pantoja showcased his dominance at UFC 317 in Las Vegas, retaining his flyweight title with a victory over Kai Kara-France. The champion’s performance further cemented his place in the UFC flyweight record books.
Pantoja (28-5) secured the win via rear-naked choke in the third round. He now holds the division’s records for most victories (14), finishes (8), and submissions (6). The fight, held at T-Mobile Arena, marked Pantoja’s fourth title defence.
In Round 3, Pantoja instantly pressured Kara-France (25-12, 1 NC), backing him against the cage before executing a takedown and swiftly taking his back. He secured a body triangle and patiently worked for the fight-ending choke.
“I am always training for this position but I still am evolving,” Pantoja said. “I come from American Top Team, which is the best team in the world. That’s my fourth title defense, I think I deserve a better ranking in the pound-for-pound.”
Pantoja’s evolution since winning the title is evident in his improved efficiency and confidence. Despite easing off in a tight round 2, he rallied to pressure Kara-France with body kicks, leaving a visible mark.
Kara-France, 32, was competing for the third time since 2022, earning the title shot after a first-round knockout of Steve Erceg in august. This loss marks Kara-France’s third in his last four fights. Pantoja entered 2025 with a 9-0 record against top-10 flyweights.
Looking ahead, Joshua Van, a 23-year-old rising star, is a potential next opponent for Pantoja. Van (15-2) impressed earlier in the night with a win over Brandon Royval. Van, who defeated Bruno Silva just weeks prior at UFC 316, stepped in on short notice for the injured Manel kape.
“[Van] is a humble guy, he deserves a shot at the title next,” Pantoja said.
“[Pantoja] is a great champion but he ain’t never fought Joshua Van,” Van said.
