Jon Jones Defends UFC Heavyweight Title at UFC 309
On July 17, 2023, Jon Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, successfully defended his title against Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Jones won by TKO in the third round at 4 minutes and 29 seconds.
Jones solidified his reputation as one of the greatest fighters in mixed martial arts history with this victory. He achieved a total of 16 title wins, including 14 in the light heavyweight class and two in heavyweight. Miocic, known for his record in heavyweight title fights, was unable to overcome Jones.
From the beginning of the match, Jones utilized jabs and body kicks to control the fight. Although Miocic attempted to close the distance and secured a takedown, Jones responded with effective elbows.
In the third round, Jones delivered a back kick, a move he practiced for six months with his taekwondo coach. A jab and a straight punch landed on Miocic’s chin, causing him to lose balance. Jones followed with a powerful kick to Miocic’s stomach, prompting the referee to stop the match as Miocic fell to the ground.
After his victory, Jones celebrated with Donald Trump, the 47th President-elect of the United States, who attended the event. Jones praised Miocic, acknowledging his strength and skill, but noted that injuries can change the outcome of a fight.
Regarding his future, Jones hinted that he might not retire. He expressed interest in fighting Alex Ferreira, the light heavyweight champion, over interim champion Tom Aspinall. UFC CEO Dana White suggested that a fight between Jones and Aspinall could be significant for heavyweight history.
After the fight, Miocic reflected on his defeat, acknowledging Jones as one of the best fighters. He expressed a desire to retire from the sport.
In the co-main event, former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler by unanimous decision to reclaim his title.
