UHS Deploys AI Agents for Post-Discharge Patient Care
Updated June 18, 2025
Universal Health Services (UHS) is expanding its use of generative AI in healthcare, launching AI agents in partnership with Hippocratic AI.These agents will assist clinicians with post-discharge patient engagement, making follow-up calls to monitor well-being and answer questions.
The goal is to improve patient outcomes by quickly detecting changes in condition and providing timely support. UHS initiated the program at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in las Vegas, and Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.Following positive patient feedback, the health system plans to extend the pilot to more than 10 additional hospitals in the coming months, eventually reaching all 29 acute care facilities.
This initiative reflects a growing trend of health systems piloting AI solutions to streamline tasks and reduce clinician burnout. Agentic AI, capable of autonomous decision-making, is gaining traction, with companies like Notable, Google Cloud, and Salesforce offering tools designed to alleviate administrative burdens.
Hippocratic’s AI tool serves as an initial point of contact, reviewing medication instructions, probing for new symptoms, and addressing patient inquiries. patients retain the option to speak with a human nurse, as clinicians can follow up after the AI-led call. Patient ratings for the AI interaction have averaged 9 out of 10.
Marc Miller, UHS president and CEO, said the company is pleased with patient engagement with the generative AI agent and looks forward to expanding the program. UHS anticipates that these AI agents will enhance nurse efficiency. However, some experts caution that the time savings from AI may not always translate into reduced workloads for clinicians.
What’s next
UHS plans a phased rollout of the AI agent technology across its hospitals, continuing to monitor patient feedback and assess the impact on clinician workflows. The expansion aims to provide broader access to post-discharge support and improve overall patient care through innovative uses of artificial intelligence.
