The victim, identified as Shawnquanice Kimbrough, 34, of North Lawndale, was visiting UI Health for an appointment at the time of the shooting. She was pronounced dead just before 2:00 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, 2026, to determine the precise cause and manner of death. Authorities stated she was shot in the head.
UIC police initially issued a campus safety alert, advising individuals to avoid the area unless already on campus. The alert was later lifted after authorities determined there was no ongoing threat to the campus community. The northeast section of the third floor of the parking garage was closed for investigation but the remainder of the garage has since reopened.
Investigators believe the shooting may be related to a domestic dispute, though a definitive motive has not yet been officially determined. The incident is currently under investigation by UIC police, who are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Individuals can contact police directly or utilize the campus’ anonymous incident reporting form.
The shooting occurred less than a mile west of another incident involving gunfire. However, authorities have stated that the two shootings do not appear to be connected.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding violence in the city. While the UIC campus was briefly under alert, officials emphasized that there was no continuing danger to students, faculty, or staff. The focus remains on the investigation and bringing those responsible to justice.
The circumstances surrounding this tragic event are still unfolding. Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses, according to UIC police. The loss of life is a stark reminder of the impact of violence and the importance of addressing domestic disputes and ensuring public safety.
