Updated June 18, 2025

The United Kingdom⁤ is ⁤increasingly embracing the world of audiobooks, from Benedict Cumberbatch narrating ‍Austen to Meryl Streep reading nora Ephron. This growing popularity⁢ is reflected in the latest sales figures.

According to the Publishers‍ Association (PA),‍ audiobook revenue generated by UK publishers soared ⁣by 31% between ‍2023 and 2024, hitting a record ⁣£268 million last year. This surge in popularity‍ highlights the increasing ‍role of digital audio in the publishing industry.

Debbie Hicks, creative director‍ at The Reading Agency ‍charity, noted the unique appeal of audiobooks. “We’re seeing a real demand for audiobooks given the unique way ⁣they ⁣fit into our increasingly busy lives,” Hicks said. “Audiobooks make reading more accessible, whether that’s for people with dyslexia or visual impairments, or simply those who struggle to find time to sit ⁤down with a customary book.”

Listeners appreciate the ability to multitask while enjoying a book.”You can listen to audiobooks while commuting, exercising or doing chores,” Hicks added. “for young adults especially, audiobooks are a natural fit with how ⁤they live and read.”

dan Conway, chief executive at the PA, emphasized the audiobook’s growing influence. “Audiobooks⁣ have soared in popularity ⁣over the past 10 years,” Conway said. “The same is true of podcasts, so clearly audio content in general is hugely on the rise.”

Publishers are responding by investing in high-quality audiobook content.”Some of the most accomplished audiobooks of the past few years have ⁤offered listeners ‍the opportunity to hear world-renowned figures deliver thier stories themselves,” Conway stated. “We ⁢have also seen full cast productions, high-profile casting and innovative recording techniques.”

Tina, who runs the book-themed Instagram account‍ @tbretc, listened to over 100 audiobooks last year. She finds that audiobooks allow her to “enjoy myself while doing the many life tasks that come with being a ⁣working mom⁤ of two.” She added, “Audiobook production has‍ also come a long way, and sometimes listening to a⁢ story brings an even better experience⁣ than reading a book with your eyes.”

The PA also ⁣reported that fiction ‍revenue rose 18% between 2023 and 2024, surpassing £1 billion for ‍the first time.”Fiction growth has been driven⁤ by fantasy ⁢and romance,”‍ Conway said. “The desire for escapism ⁢in these tumultuous times may be ⁢a⁣ factor in the recent success of ⁣these genres.”

While consumer nonfiction revenue saw a 4% decrease, it⁢ aligned with fiction, ⁣both bringing in £1.1 billion‍ each in 2024. Children’s books revenue remained steady at £413 million.
