London, UK – The UK government has strongly‌ condemned the latest round of bounties issued by Hong Kong authorities, targeting individuals living in the ⁤UK‌ and Canada. The move, which follows similar actions in July and December 2023, has intensified concerns over Beijing’s extraterritorial reach and its efforts to ‍silence dissent among the Hong Kong diaspora.

Beijing’s Expanding Reach: New Bounties Issued

Hong Kong police have announced new bounties on ⁣several individuals accused of violating national security laws.Among those named are Mung Siu-tat and Fok Ka-chi, who are alleged to have⁤ operated a social‌ media channel known as “Tuesdayroad.” The list⁣ also includes prominent figures such as politician Nathan Law, a former lawmaker, and activist and commentator Yuan Gong-Yi.

Thes⁣ latest bounties are part of an escalating campaign by Hong Kong authorities to pursue and intimidate pro-democracy activists⁢ and critics who have sought refuge ⁤overseas. The first series ⁣of rewards, issued in july and December of last year, targeted nathan Law, who has spoken out ⁣about the increased danger ⁢he faces following the declaration of⁤ a bounty, and Simon Cheng, a former UK consulate employee who was‍ detained in China in 2019. A third round of rewards specifically targeted six pro-democracy activists residing in⁣ the UK and Canada, including Tony Chung, a former leader of ⁢a pro-independence group.

UK’s Commitment to ⁣hong Kong Residents

In response to‍ the latest bounties, UK Home Secretary James Cleverly and Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy issued a joint statement reaffirming⁣ the UK’s unwavering support for the people of Hong Kong. “This government will continue ‌to stand with the people of Hong Kong, including those ⁤who have made the UK their ⁣home,” the statement read. ⁣”We take the protection of their rights, freedoms, and safety ‌very seriously.”

The statement underscored⁤ the UK’s ⁣commitment to human rights, the rule ⁣of law, and the safety‍ of all individuals within its borders. As‌ a testament ‌to this commitment, the UK has taken further steps to sever ties with‍ Hong⁣ Kong’s extradition‌ system‍ by removing Hong Kong from the Extradition Act 2003.

The Hong Kong BN(O) Visa Route: ‌A Pathway to Safety

The⁤ UK has established a special visa scheme, the ⁢Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa route, ‍which has provided a lifeline for many Hong Kong residents seeking safety and a‍ new life.Introduced in 2021, this route has seen approximately 150,000 hong Kong residents move to the UK, according to the⁢ Home Office.

The BN(O) visa is available‌ to holders of ‍a ‌British National (Overseas) passport⁣ and their immediate dependents, offering ⁢a fast track to UK⁤ citizenship. The BN(O) status itself was created before the UK handed over Hong Kong, a former British colony, back to ‍China in 1997. While‍ a BN(O) passport is primarily‍ a travel document that ⁢does not confer citizenship rights, it does⁤ entitle holders to consular assistance outside of Hong Kong and China. those who have successfully obtained the visa can apply for settlement after five years and ⁢afterward for British citizenship⁢ after an additional 12 months.

Broader Context: Crackdown on Dissent

the issuance of these bounties occurs against a backdrop of a meaningful crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong. In November⁣ of last year, a Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of pro-democracy leaders to lengthy ‍prison terms⁢ for subversion, following a controversial national security trial. This ongoing suppression of democratic freedoms‌ and the targeting of individuals abroad highlight ‍the challenges faced by those who advocate for greater autonomy and ⁤human rights in Hong Kong. The UK’s firm stance⁣ signals its continued dedication to upholding democratic values and protecting those who have sought refuge from political persecution.
