On 24 July 2024, the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) published the “Participation Survey 2023–24”, a statistical report for 2023/2024 for DCMS’s areas of responsibility.
The survey, conducted between May 2023 and March 2024, targeted people aged 16 and over in England at the age of 18 and asked about the frequency of visits and use of arts activities, museums, art galleries, libraries, archives, heritage sites and sporting events, as well as their attitudes towards each field. Survey results on internet use, ownership of devices such as smartphones, and learning of digital skills have also been published.
Regarding libraries, the report states that approximately 30% of adults had used library services at least once in the past year, including online use, (a 6% increase from the previous year), and that the most common frequency of use was three or four times a year.
