Neonicotinoids, introduced in the ‍1990s, became a popular tool for pest control. tho, concerns ‍about their impact on pollinators led ⁤the European Union to restrict their use, culminating in a⁤ complete outdoor ⁣ban ⁣by 2018. The UK ‍initially allowed emergency use on sugar beets, but that ‍exception has as been revoked.

While environmental groups applauded the ban, it presented challenges for farmers who relied on neonicotinoids. The need for option solutions increased costs and complexity, prompting some to reconsider growing rapeseed⁤ (canola) altogether.

Following the ban, British ⁣farmers reduced rapeseed planting. In the ⁤five years before 2018,the UK planted an average of 634,000 hectares.⁤ In the five years after, that figure dropped to 394,000 hectares. Production fell from 2.2 million metric tons to 1.2 million metric tons.
