UK Airspace Paralyzed by Afternoon Technical Fault

A sudden technical fault struck air traffic control systems, grounding departures at major aviation hubs including Heathrow and Gatwick, according to reports from Sky News and The Guardian.

The failure materialized early in the afternoon. It heavily restricted take-offs at London-area airports.

Nats, the UK’s air traffic control service, deployed engineers directly to the affected sites to troubleshoot the software or hardware glitch. In a statement issued at 1:46 pm, Nats confirmed it was investigating a technical issue causing disruption to flight departures. The agency advised passengers to check directly with their respective airlines for status updates.

London Hubs and Regional Terminals Take the Hit

London Heathrow, the nation’s busiest airport, reported that inbound aircraft continued to land. However, departures suffered extensive delays and multiple cancellations.

European air traffic management agency Eurocontrol noted that some incoming flights were temporarily held at international departure points to manage congestion. Disruptions were anticipated to persist into the evening.

Other major airports experienced immediate knock-on effects. According to The Guardian, departures from Gatwick, Stansted, London City, and Manchester were heavily impacted.

Regional facilities also felt the strain. Belfast City Airport warned passengers of incoming and outgoing delays. Birmingham Airport urged travelers to arrive strictly in accordance with airline check-in guidelines. Meanwhile, Edinburgh Airport confirmed that the technical malfunction risked disrupting its local operations.

Airlines Scramble Amid Strict Safety Protocols

British Airways stated it was actively dealing with operational disruptions and communicating directly with impacted travelers.

Aviation authorities and individual airport operators emphasized that safety protocols necessitated the groundings while engineers isolated the fault.
