UK Govt Warns Over Palestine Action Following Rooney Pledge
Sally Rooney Risks Legal trouble for Palestine Action Support
Award-winning author Sally Rooney faces potential legal repercussions for her intention to donate earnings from her books and BBC adaptations to Palestine Action, a group recently proscribed as a terrorist organization in the UK. Downing street has warned that supporting a proscribed organization is a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act, and urged against backing the group.
Ms. Rooney, who resides in County Mayo, Ireland, has stated she is willing to accept the label of “supporter of terror” under UK law if her support for Palestine Action leads to it. She intends to use her income and public platform to continue supporting the group and “direct action against genocide in whatever way I can.”
While Palestine Action is proscribed under UK terrorism legislation, it is indeed not currently proscribed under Irish law. The BBC has clarified that Ms.Rooney is not a staff member and that her financial decisions are her own. They have broadcast adaptations of her novels, ”Normal People” and “Conversations with Friends.”
Dr.Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland, expressed support for Ms.Rooney, stating she is “using her voice to call out international law and human rights violations in palestine.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office has declined to comment specifically on Ms. Rooney’s statements, but reiterated that supporting a proscribed organization is illegal and will be enforced by law. The proscription of Palestine Action is based on security advice following serious attacks attributed to the group, as assessed by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Center.
The BBC has stated that matters relating to proscribed organizations are the responsibility of the relevant authorities and confirmed it is not currently collaborating with Ms. Rooney on any new projects.
