UK-Gulf States Trade Deal on the Horizon Amid Human Rights Concerns

The United Kingdom is on the verge of signing a importent trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),which includes Bahrain,Kuwait,Oman,Qatar,Saudi Arabia,and the United Arab Emirates. This trade deal is projected to initially generate £1.6 billion, with expectations of an £8.6 billion annual increase by 2035.
Negotiations between the UK and the GCC have been underway since 2022. The financial services and automotive sectors are anticipated to benefit substantially from this agreement. This development follows a series of trade agreements secured in May with India,the U.S., and the EU.

Though, the trade agreement faces scrutiny due to human rights issues within the Gulf region. Previous attempts by the Conservative government to finalize a similar deal in 2024 were stalled.Concerns persist regarding the potential legitimization of human rights abuses, echoing criticisms raised during negotiations led by former Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch.
