UK Imposes New Sanctions on Russia’s Shadow Fleet
UK Targets ”Shadow Fleet” Vessels Transporting Russian Oil
London Cracks Down on Ships evading Sanctions, Aiming to Dry Up Funding for Putin’s War
London, UK – In a move to further cripple Russia’s war machine, the UK government has announced new sanctions targeting 20 vessels suspected of transporting illicit Russian oil. Thes ships, part of what is known as the “shadow fleet,” operate outside customary shipping regulations, frequently enough turning off tracking systems to avoid detection.
Among the targeted vessels are the “Ocean Faye,” “Andaman Skies,” and “Mianzimu,” each of which transported over four million barrels of Russian oil in 2024 alone.
“These sanctions are aimed at choking off the flow of funds to Putin’s regime,” said a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office. “By targeting these vessels, we are making it increasingly arduous for russia to profit from its illegal war in Ukraine.”
This latest round of sanctions brings the total number of ships targeted by the UK for transporting russian energy resources to over 100, including 93 oil tankers.
The sanctions prohibit these “shadow fleet” vessels from entering UK ports and accessing key British maritime services. The UK government believes this will force many of these ships to remain stranded at sea, unable to continue funneling money into Putin’s war chest.
“These measures demonstrate our unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its actions,” the spokesperson added.
UK Strikes Back Against “Shadow Fleet” Fueling Putin’s War
NewsDirectory3.com Exclusive Interview with Maritime Security Expert Dr. Anya Petrova
NewsDirectory3.com: The UK has announced new sanctions targeting 20 ships suspected of transporting Russian oil, ships known as the ”shadow fleet.” Can you tell us more about these vessels and their role in Russia’s war effort?
Dr. Petrova: The ”shadow fleet” comprises vessels deliberately operating outside the norms of international shipping regulations. Thay frequently switch off their tracking systems, making it difficult to monitor their movements and origins. These ships are crucial to Russia as they allow the country to continue exporting oil, despite Western sanctions.
NewsDirectory3.com: How effective are these new sanctions likely to be?
Dr. Petrova: The impact depends on several factors, including international cooperation.
The UK’s move is significant as it sends a clear message: countries are willing to take concrete action against those aiding Russia’s war machine.
NewsDirectory3.com: The UK government claims these sanctions will “choke off funds” to Putin’s regime. Is that realistic?
Dr. Petrova: It’s certainly a step in the right direction. By restricting access to ports and maritime services, the UK is making it harder and more expensive for these ships to operate. This will undoubtedly increase costs and possibly dissuade some operators from participating in this illicit trade. However,Russia has proven to be resourceful in finding choice routes and markets for its oil.
NewsDirectory3.com: What other measures can be taken to curtail the ”shadow fleet’s” activities?
Dr. Petrova: Enhanced international cooperation is key.
Sharing intelligence on these vessels and their movements is crucial.
We also need stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms to prevent ships from “flagging” themselves to countries with lax oversight, allowing them to operate with impunity.
