The United⁣ Kingdom has lost its measles-free status, according to the World Health ⁤Association (WHO),⁤ due to a surge in cases and deaths and declining vaccination‍ rates. The WHO announced it no longer considers Britain to⁤ have eliminated measles because the disease ⁤has⁣ re-established itself within the ⁢country.

The UK joins five othre European and Central Asian ⁤nations – Spain, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan⁤ – that have lost ⁣their measles-free status. the WHO had previously recognized the ‍UK as having eliminated measles between 2021⁢ and 2023.

Recent data shows a significant increase ⁣in cases, with⁣ 3,681 recorded in 2024.Over the past six years⁤ (2019-2025),the UK has recorded 20 measles deaths – the⁢ same number as in the previous 19 ⁣years (1999-2018).

Public health ‍officials⁣ attribute the decline to falling‌ uptake of the MMR vaccine, fueled by vaccine hesitancy ⁢and challenges in accessing appointments.⁣

“it’s sad to see the UK losing its measles elimination status, even though it’s not⁤ surprising given outbreaks in recent years,” said⁢ Dr. Simon⁢ Williams, a ⁢public ‍health ⁢researcher at Swansea University.‍ “Measles is⁤ an eminently preventable⁤ disease‍ but vaccine coverage ‍of MMR has declined. We are ‍seeing vaccine hesitancy growing in the UK, as in many countries, and social media-based conspiracies about MMR are a factor.”

the ‍WHO⁤ recommends a 95% MMR vaccination⁣ rate to ⁢achieve herd ⁣immunity and eliminate‍ measles, mumps, and rubella. The organization’s European regional verification commission expressed concern over the loss of ⁣elimination ⁢status and emphasized the need for increased vaccination ⁤efforts.
