Teenager Dies After Stabbing Outside Birmingham Mosque

A 18-year-old man has died after being stabbed outside a mosque in Smethwick, West Midlands, on Friday evening. The incident, which occurred on Oldbury Road just before 9pm, has prompted a murder investigation. Two other men, aged 19 and 22, were also injured and taken to hospital, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The victim has been named as Zeshan Afzal, from Smethwick. West Midlands Police confirmed the name on Saturday afternoon. Officers were called to reports of a disturbance outside the mosque and found the 18-year-old with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those involved. A spokesman for West Midlands Police stated that, at this stage, the incident is not being treated as religiously or racially aggravated, but investigations are ongoing.

“We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is and we will have extra officers in the area over the coming days to offer reassurance to the community,” the police spokesman said.

Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, including mobile phone or dashcam footage, to come forward. Anyone with information can contact West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log number 4896 of February 20. Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The attack has prompted a visible police presence in the Smethwick area, as officers work to reassure residents and gather further information. The investigation is in its early stages and police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have any relevant information to contact them.

The incident occurred on February 20, 2026, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured men were hospitalized, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening. The police investigation is ongoing, with a focus on reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements.
